Christmas Brunch Image from My Recipes Menu Recipes found on Pinterest Oven roasted breakfast potatoes with caramelized onions and bacon Egg casserole Buttermilk blueberry breakfast cake Cranberry pineapple sparkling punch Winter fruit salad Eggnog (Spiked, of course for Ed Sr.) Excerpt from Born out of Lust and A Johnson Family Saga Two days before Christmas, Aunt Elaine and Edward’s cousins had come to stay for Christmas into the New Year. Since she and her husband were no longer together, spending time with her sister and family at the holidays had become a tradition. The Johnson house was big enough to accommodate everyone comfortably. In her spare time, with Christmas music playing on the radio, Lydia had gift-wrapped everything for her whole family. The tree was a twelve-foot tall spruce pine, cut down by Ed himself and decorated with red and green flashing lights, red, green and gold ornaments and even a few ornaments from Edward’s kindergarten days.
Edward was still that excited little boy at heart at holiday time with his family visiting, but him being the older cousin he played it cool. He woke up Christmas morning to the smell of breakfast cooking. His mother and auntie in typical fashion always got up earlier than the rest of the house on Christmas to do their special Christmas brunch breakfast and start dinner for later in the evening. Edward’s mother had spent the past few weeks shopping for everyone including Anthony; she’d sent his things gift-wrapped and all to Georgia two weeks prior, ensuring it would be there under his tree from his father at Christmas time. It took a strong woman to do such a thing, and when she told Elaine that was her plan, her sister scoffed at her, “You’re a bigger fool than I thought,” she told her. “Don’t say that to me,” Lydia said hurt that her sister would think that way about her. “I chose to stay with Ed for better and for worse. In order for me to move on with him, I have to forgive,” Lydia told her and the subject was dropped. Christmas time always brought out the best in her. She was already a charitable and loving woman and Ed knew he had pure gold when most women would have stuck a knife in his heart for the humiliation he caused or cheated out of revenge. Staying with him of course afforded her things in life that she may not have been able to acquire on her own; especially after she had given up her career at his insistence early in their marriage. “That is why you should have kept your career,” Elaine told her. “I had something to fall back on when I left Raymond,” she said. Lydia did what was best for her and her family; she would have had to start over. But truthfully that wasn’t the only reason she stayed; she wasn’t a weak or pitiful woman as her sister suggested and even some of her friends. She wanted to stay with her husband because she loved him and that should have been the end of judgment from people who loved her. If she was content, they should have been happy for her. But that was life; people were going to judge no matter what, she thought. Pretty soon the rest of the house was awake and were slowly coming downstairs after showers and looking presentable. Edward was the first downstairs and in the kitchen. “Morning Mom, Merry Christmas,” he said with a kiss on her cheek and he did the same for Auntie Elaine. After breakfast and after a short “Why are you thankful” speech from everyone it was time to open the gifts. It was such a homey scene-with the fireplace going and the huge window overlooking the big snowflakes lazily falling to the ground. Ed pulled Lydia to the side as he looked at his family opening gifts that he paid for and gave her a special gift away from the prying eyes of her nosy sister. He knew Lydia would tell her anyway. He gave her an expensive diamond earring and necklace set. “I love you; I don’t know where I would be without you,” he said and kissed her lips. Edward turned right at that precise moment watching his parent’s intimate kiss and so did Elaine, who promptly turned her head and rolled her eyes. She had the misfortune of happening upon them making love the previous night. She wanted to talk to her sister, and assuming Ed was down in his study which was typical, she opened her sister’s bedroom door without knocking wishing she could take the image of Ed grinding into Lydia from her memory. She didn’t know why her sister was being so naïve and blinded by trinkets; expensive trinkets, but trinkets nonetheless and an occasional screw from her husband. That was probably the first time Elaine ever regretted leaving her husband; she missed getting regular sex and wasn’t interested in having a fly-by-night friend for those lonely times and primal urges.
